The Last of Us: What we know about the HBO series

HBO’s The Last of Us TV series will adapt Naughty Dog and Sony’s popular post-apocalyptic video game series, one of many Sony game adaptations currently in development, including the Uncharted film starring Tom Holland. Craig Mazin, creator of the acclaimed Chernobyl miniseries, and Neil Druckmann, writer and director of The Last of Us games, are directing The Last of Us. Carolyn Strauss (Game of Thrones, Chernobyl) is also involved in the production.

The Last of Us is set in an apocalyptic world just after society collapsed after the emergence of the infected. A brain infection with Cordyceps, a mutated variant of the Cordyceps fungus, quickly spreads through the population, killing those infected or turning them into violent, mindless creatures. Because the infection can be spread by both airborne spores and bites, survivors often wear gas masks for protection in certain situations.

The plot

The story of The Last of Us TV series will primarily focus on and adapt the events of the first game, telling about Joel and Ellie’s encounter and their original adventure. Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann said the series could expand on the game’s original story content, but only in a way that fleshes out what already exists.

That means nothing in the games is drastically removed or changed, but there’s room for more detail in the series than in the video game. Producers also said material from The Last of Us Part 2 could be included in the HBO series, but that likely would only happen to a small extent. Chances are we’ll see a series focused primarily on the first game, with additional seasons to tackle subsequent games.

release date

According to an Instagram message from actor Gabriel Luna, production of The Last of Us began in July 2021. Filming is scheduled to end in early June 2022, but is likely to end earlier. According to Neil Druckmann, who recently posted the first photoset in the series, this one is moving along fast.

At the moment, it seems unlikely that the series will launch before December 2022 or even January 2023 given the time it takes to shoot and the editing required afterwards. However, many fans are already beginning to envision releasing the first episode online on Sunday, September 25, 2022, the day before Last of Us Day, corresponding to the date of the day of the epidemic in-game. We can always dream!
